For a minimalist kitchen that isn’t equipped with a microwave, oven, or grill, but just a stove, the number of dishes you can cook is obviously limited. That said, it doesn’t mean you can’t do anything.
If you intend to create a delicious dish with sweet potatoes in that kitchen, let me give you a hand. Here is how to cook sweet potatoes on the stove (4 easy recipes that you can try at home).
Candied Sweet Potatoes
Candied sweet potatoes are my new favorite snack this year. They’re buttery, soft, sweet, and extra saucy with a caramelized edge, which is perfect for not only a random Sunday night throughout the year but also special occasions. Such as Easter and Christmas.
They taste even better with sea salt, rosemary, and orange zest.
All the ingredients are easily found in any supermarket or market and the cooking process is simple. Here is how:
- 1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract
- ½ tbsp. ground ginger
- ½ tbsp. ground nutmeg
- ¾ tbsp. ground cinnamon
- 200 gr (1 cup) of dark brown or packed light sugar
- 60ml (1/4 cup) pure maple syrup
- 2 tsp. water
- 115 gr (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
- ½ tsp. salt
- 4 pounds of medium sweet potatoes
Optional for garnish: dried or chopped fresh rosemary, sea salt
Optional: 2 tsp. orange zest
Step1: After cleansing thoroughly, peel and cut sweet potatoes into ½”-thick slices, then put in a pot. Sprinkle salt on top and layer all of them with nonstick grease spraying.
Preheat a medium saucepan on medium fire; pour all the ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar, maple syrup, water, and butter into it and keep stirring until the butter has melted.
Keep boiling at medium heat for two minutes without stirring, then turn off the stove, add vanilla extract and orange zest to the sauce, and stir.
Step 3: Heat a thin layer of olive oil in your skillet over medium heat then top it up with a single layer of potato slices.
Step 4: Sprinkle with ginger powder, curry, garlic powder, pepper, and salt and remaining cooking for 5 minutes or until they turn browned and soft.
Step 5: Flip all the potato slices, repeat step 4 on this side.
Skillet Sweet Potatoes
If you are pressed for time, this delicious, quick-to-cook side dish from sweet potatoes is a great choice.
It only takes around 30 minutes for the cooking process but you can make a big batch to save for the whole week. That means you only have to set foot on the table when it’s mealtime. A useful tip to shorten the cooking time (if you want it to) is cutting sweet potatoes into smaller cubes.
It will also make the food evenly tender inside with perfectly crisp outside.
- 2 tsp Coconut Oil
- Ground Cinnamon, to taste
- 1/2 tsp Dried Parsley
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- 1 Sweet Potato
Rinse thoroughly, peel, and cut sweet potatoes into ½” cubes. Over medium heat, preheat a skillet then layer it with cooking oil.
Now, cook them for around 20 minutes over medium heat; stir sometimes and make sure they are nice and crispy without getting burnt.
After all the potato pieces are cooked evenly; crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, turn off the stove. Ready to serve.
Smashed Sweet Potatoes
1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tbsp. Original Spread-tub
2 tbsp. Ginger Orange Stir Fry Sauce-Marinade
2 tbsp. firmly packed brown sugar
1-1/2 pounds of sweet potatoes
Rinse thoroughly, peel, and cut sweet potatoes into 1”-thick cubes.
Preheat a saucepan over high heat. Add enough water to cover it, then add sweet potato pieces. Boil them for 15 minutes or until your sweet potatoes are evenly tender.
